Onfido and expired document

In the previous posts, we covered scenarios with:

  • real document and person
  • real document and light faked video and result with detected spoofing
  • real document and light faked video and approved result

Now, let’s see if Onfido can detect that the document used for digital identity verification was expired and that such a person should be rejected.
Let’s use my passport, which expired 3 years ago.

Ok. So I opened the Onfido trial link and went through the wizard on my smartphone using my expired passport. Here is the recording.

After that, a new result in Review status was available on Onfido’s dashboard.

Let’s see the details of this Onfido check. In the media, we see that just a single-page document was uploaded together with the motion video.

Let’s now check the status of the document and motion reports.

Facial similarity report: motion is green status as expected whereas document report is in Caution status. Let’s open Document reports details

So, as expected, Onfido found that the uploaded document was expired. Additionally, we encountered some other issues with image integrity and “abnormal document features.” Let’s review Onfido’s documentation to check what exactly was wrong with my document photo.

abnormal_document_features – This refers to when something other than obscuration of data points and security features makes the document insufficient to be assessed (i.e. poor image resolution, bad lighting, distortions due to capturing devices, misalignment due to cracks, visual alterations due to cases/laminates, some stickers etc.)

Ok, so maybe the quality of my photo was not good enough, or maybe the fingers on the photo are the root cause. Nevertheless, the most important issue – the expired document – was discovered. Well done, Onfido!
Let’s also check what data Onfido extracted from my document.

And it is really cool; the document number, issuing date, date of expiry, personal number, and MRZ were OCRed correctly.
Let’s also have a look at the motion report details.

Everything is green. The spoofing detection score is 0.908, which is close to 1.0 as expected.
